CB - Carles Puyol: The other half of Barça's central defensive dynamic duo alongside Piqué, Puyol's durability hasn't been ideal lately, but he's still a fantastic leader on the pitch for the Catalan outfit and for Spain and one of the hardest-working players in the game.

LM - Ángel Di María: Things didn't start off so well this season for Di María; a lack of consistency and a shocking tackle on Levante's Juanfran led to some serious doubts. Since then, things have gotten better. The Argentine winger has speed and excellent dribbling skills, and his passing has improved exponentially.
So far this season, he's made an astonishing 11 assists in 12 appearances in La Liga, already tying his total from last season, and it's only December. And in the past couple matches, he's even gotten some crackling goals of his own on the tally.
CM - Xabi Alonso: In the holding position, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano certainly have their merits, but Xabi Alonso has proved time and time again to be one of the most consistent and high-performing defensive midfielders in the world. A player with great control and a strong, but often subtle presence, Alonso is the man to call to keep the midfield in check.
CM - Xavi Hernández: He's 31 and still a regular on the Ballon d'Or short list. Regardless of how you feel about FIFA accolades, this speaks volumes about his continued excellence on the pitch and relevance to Barcelona.
Even with the depth in the Barça midfield and the rising profiles of Cesc Fábregas and Thiago Alcântara, Xavi's influence on the pitch, great vision and expert passing can be seen in every match. Also, this beautiful free kick against Granada happened. Wow.
RM - Andrés Iniesta: Although typically more at home in the center, Iniesta is capable of playing on the right. Iniesta's creativity and brilliant passing game have made him a figure as vital to the squad as a certain Argentine who we will get to in a minute.
He's proved over and over again to be a game-changer, and the squad's performance has suffered when he's been benched with injuries. As with Puyol, durability is an issue, but when he's fit, there's no one better.
FW - Lionel Messi: We could talk about why for days. With so much skill on both of these squads and a wealth of great players to choose from, a start for the Argentine wizard was one of the few absolute no-brainers.
