El Clasico Countdown: Picking a 2011 Real Madrid-Barcelona Combined Starting 11 by bleacherreport.com

GK - Iker Casillas: Victor Valdés is a fantastic goalkeeper as well, and his status as an extremely strong, consistent asset to Barcelona is undeniable.
If we're looking at numbers, it's a tough call: Valdés actually trumps Casillas for clean sheets so far this season as well, with 10 in La Liga in comparison to Casillas' seven (not that either number is anything to sneeze at), although Casillas has twice as many total saves.
This one was a tough call, but this tremendous save in the Champions League against Ajax tips the scales in San Iker's favor.

LB - Marcelo: Marcelo may not be the best left-back in the world, and the position hasn't exactly been the strongest point for either team (although Eric Ábidal, too, is quite good), but he's getting better. He gives the back four an attacking edge and played a role in some strong end-of-the-season performances for Los Merengues at the end of their Champions League run.
He's still got work to do, but his power and attacking flair have led to some key goals for the Merengues.

CB - Gerard Piqué: Piqué is the heir-apparent to Carles Puyol's central defense throne, and perhaps one of the best centre-backs in the world right now. He was an essential player in Barça's double last season and embodies "total football" in defense, handling the last third of the pitch with composure and power while still working to help move things forward.
CB - Carles Puyol: The other half of Barça's central defensive dynamic duo alongside Piqué, Puyol's durability hasn't been ideal lately, but he's still a fantastic leader on the pitch for the Catalan outfit and for Spain and one of the hardest-working players in the game.
RB - Sergio Ramos/Dani Alves: Honestly, this one wa
s a toss-up. Either one is perfectly capable of taking this position on and excelling. You have two of the best right-backs in the world—Ramos has versatility on his side; Alves speed.
Ramos has the physicality and the tough tackle; Alves has great speed and attacking ability. If there were a way to fuse them into one player in this hypothetical 11, that is who we would choose.
LM - Ángel Di María: Things didn't start off so well this season for Di María; a lack of consistency and a shocking tackle on Levante's Juanfran led to some serious doubts. Since then, things have gotten better. The Argentine winger has speed and excellent dribbling skills, and his passing has improved exponentially.
So far this season, he's made an astonishing 11 assists in 12 appearances in La Liga, already tying his total from last season, and it's only December. And in the past couple matches, he's even gotten some crackling goals of his own on the tally.
CM - Xabi Alonso: In the holding position, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano certainly have their merits, but Xabi Alonso has proved time and time again to be one of the most consistent and high-performing defensive midfielders in the world. A player with great control and a strong, but often subtle presence, Alonso is the man to call to keep the midfield in check.
CM - Xavi Hernández: He's 31 and still a regular on the Ballon d'Or short list. Regardless of how you feel about FIFA accolades, this speaks volumes about his continued excellence on the pitch and relevance to Barcelona.
Even with the depth in the Barça midfield and the rising profiles of Cesc Fábregas and Thiago Alcântara, Xavi's influence on the pitch, great vision and expert passing can be seen in every match. Also, this beautiful free kick against Granada happened. Wow.
RM - Andrés Iniesta: Although typically more at home in the center, Iniesta is capable of playing on the right. Iniesta's creativity and brilliant passing game have made him a figure as vital to the squad as a certain Argentine who we will get to in a minute.
He's proved over and over again to be a game-changer, and the squad's performance has suffered when he's been benched with injuries. As with Puyol, durability is an issue, but when he's fit, there's no one better.
FW - Lionel Messi: We could talk about why for days. With so much skill on both of these squads and a wealth of great players to choose from, a start for the Argentine wizard was one of the few absolute no-brainers.
The catalyst of the Barcelona attack, Messi's mad skills have produced 17 goals in 15 appearances and six assists so far this season, and in that, several absolutely magical hat tricks like this one.
FW - Cristiano Ronaldo: For every Pelé, a Maradona; and for this generation, for every Messi, there's a Ronaldo. Seeing them play on the same hypothetical team would certainly be mind-blowing considering the fans-and-media-hyped rivalry which exists between them, galvanized further by them both being shortlisted once again for the Ballon d'Or.
